UK Consultation on Interoperability of Electronic Toll Collection

Date: 25/9/2006

Source: Intelligent Highway (September 1, 2006)

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has begun a consultation with the aim of providing a response to the EC's Directive on interoperability of Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems. The consultation will conclude on 17 October 2006.

The EC Directive does not require Member States to introduce road user charging, but does mandate that should a system be deployed it should use one of the specified technologies (GNSS, GSM or DSRC) and that a European Electronic Tolling System (EETS) is created to define technical, legal and commercial conditions for interoperability.

The DfT consultation takes the form of a series of questions and it is the DfT's view that the EETS should be cost effective and not pose undue burdens on new and existing schemes.

HA is recommended to consider responding to this consultation.
