In June 2006 the European Commission adopted a policy for sustainable mobility. The policy builds on the 2001 White Paper on transport. Actions include creating a competitive European railway network. Shipping will also be developed, with an emphasis on land-based connections.

An annual European road safety day is to be organised from 2007 onwards to promote an integrated approach to road safety and raise awareness of road safety. Some of the actions planned for deployment of sustainable mobility solutions include:

  • Optimisation of existing transport modes
  • Mobility improvement for citizens
  • Better transport solutions using new technologies (including Galileo)
