Richard Cuerden, TRL Academy Director, presented at the European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection Workshop, chaired by Ms Róża Thun (MEP). Richard outlined the work TRL has undertaken on behalf of the European Commission over a four year period, helping to develop the current proposal to update Europe’s General Safety Regulations. This is the most significant change to vehicle safety Type Approval requirements anywhere in the world, helping the EU Industry to remain competitive with regard to the challenges of developing automated vehicles, because it includes measures such as Advanced Driver Distraction Recognition, Intelligent Speed Assistance and Vulnerable Road User Detection.

TRL’s role was to inform the EP and the Council prior to voting for the proposal, which according to TRL research will prevent 25,000 fatalities and 140,000 serious casualties on EU roads. The EC has awarded TRL the follow-on contract ahead of the GSR proposal being approved by EP and Council, to draft the necessary changes to vehicle regulations. The evidence TRL provided contributed to the European Council approving the general approach for GSR on 29 November. The vote in the European Parliament is expected in February 2019.
