This project reviewed the level of support available through international sources of finance to help developing countries formulate and implement policies and measures to improve transport fuel economy.

The challenge

The FIA Foundation has an international reputation for innovative global road safety philanthropy, practical environmental research and interventions to improve air quality and tackle climate change and high impact strategic advocacy in the areas of road traffic injury prevention and motor vehicle fuel efficiency. They seek ‘Safe, Clean, Fair and Green’ mobility for all, to ensure a sustainable future.

They commissioned TRL’s specialists to research and report on available funding sources. The aim was to provide an objective overview that could help improve transport fuel economy in developing countries through policy development.

Our approach

We took a practical approach to providing a reference guide that would increase awareness and understanding of the support available. Our aim was to show how national governments in developing countries could access the international financial mechanisms we listed.

The results

Our guidance document was published and circulated. It listed current funding sources, explained access mechanics, provided insight into building the case for vehicle fuel economy and analysed the potential impact of policy implementation.
