In 1977 the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) commissioned Mott, Hay and Anderson, Consulting Engineers, to attempt to develop a more rational approach to the design of buried flexible pipes. This work which included theoretical analyses, model and prototype tests was completed in the early 1980's and limited details of this new design method were published (Gumbel et al 1982, see IRRD 260191). In this the second of a series of four reports the theory behind the method proposed by Gumbel (1983) is described in some detail. The development of the method is based on analysis of a long thin-walled pipe in a uniform isotropic soil that reacts with it in a linear elastic manner to form a composite structural unit. The four reports are being published as Contractor Report Nos 228-231.
