In their agreement No. CON/9523/16 dated 25th September 1984, the Transport and Road Research Laboratory retained Spencer and Partners to carry out a detailed review of field and laboratory testing procedures for soil corrosivity assessment. The study was to include a detailed review of current worldwide standards, an investigation of non-published current practice and following a detailed discussion on the interpretation and significance of the assessment techniques, a draft of recommended methods of test was to be produced. This report details the findings of the literature search and the investigation of current practice, discusses them in relation to reinforced earth and culvert construction and makes recommendations concerning the standard methods of test.
