elastomer bearing units representing a typical cross section of bearings currently in service, were subjected to static and dynamic forces at and above design limits. an assessment of changes in characteristics, performance and modes of failure was made in accordance with the current codes of practice. the general conclusion was that material and structural damage occurs in some units. they all functioned adequately at stresses in excess of 200 per cent of design values, beyond this their performance may be outside design limits. where failure occurs it is of a slow progressive nature rather than a rapid breakdown.(a)
