This summary of the United States Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) sets out the range of activities and the UK involvement in the programme. The Department of Transport in the UK, together with the Science and Engineering Research Council, appointed a UK Co-ordinator who was resident in the SHRP office in Washington DC. His function was to assist in the management of the SHRP programme and to provide a local point for information for UK organisations. The five-year, $150 million programme is now complete and 140 "products" have been identified which alongside the substantial documentation of the research provides the UK with items that can be implemented without change, those then can be implemented after some modification and information that will be used in current and future research programmes. The SHRP programme has provided the impetus for increased international collaboration and UK organisations have participated in projects valued at $2 million. The SHRP reports are listed in tables 1 to 4 in an annex to the report, under the headings: asphalt; concrete and structures; highway operations; and long term pavement performance (LTPP).
