A test has been made of the suggested method of classifying soils using a chart based on the parameters `a' and `b' from the moisture condition test. Using two sets of data, it was found that soils could not be reliably classified and that any chart based on an `a'-`b' field is unlikely to provide a workable means of determining the Casagrande classification of soils. For clays only, higher `a' and `b' values tended to indicate higher plasticity and this may be useful as a rough guide. Arising from the work is an indication that plastic limit prediction from the moisture condition calibration may be possible. (A)
