Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) is a critical method of assessing the structural condition of a pavement.

TRL operate FWD in compliance with Design Manual for Roads and Bridges Volume 7 Section 3 Part 2 HD29/08 and undertake the annual accreditation of dynamic plate devices and comply with all quality assurance requirements of the accreditation.

TRL can undertake assessment of asphalt and concrete pavements and provide standard deflection testing along with load transfer and void intercept testing.

We have the technical capability and experience to undertake back analysis of the data with our in-house pavement engineers. Back analysis is best supported with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) [LINK] data and coring [LINK].

The FWD and tow vehicle are Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 8 compliant. The FWD is fitted with sub-metre accurate GNSS (global navigation satellite system) equipment and air and surface temperature sensor for integrated data logging. To support longitudinal and transverse load transfer testing a camera system and “star bar” is used.

TRL also own two Light Weight Deflectometers (LWD) for foundation testing and operate an electric FWD when increased productivity is required.
