The results of a study to determine the economic impacts of landslide and flooding events that affect road networks are presented. The economic impacts of such events are divided into the direct economic impacts, direct consequential economic impacts, and indirect consequential economic impacts. The extent of such impacts can be considerable, particularly in rural areas where the road network is sparse and offers few route alternatives; a small event can affect economic activities over a considerable area. The vulnerability shadow is used to visually demonstrate the potential widespread nature of economic impacts.
