The Department of Transport appointed a UK co-ordinator to the United States Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and, with the support of the Science and Engineering Research Council, he has been based in the SHRP office in Washington assisting the Executive Director of SHRP in the management of the program and liaising with organisations in the UK. About $150 million have been allocated to the program over 5 years and four main areas are being addressed, namely, bituminous materials, longterm pavement performance, highway maintenance and concrete and structures. The details of the research contracts in these areas are discussed, including the UK involvement. It is concluded that the results of the research are intended to be usable products that can be put into practice at the earliest opportunity. An opportunity is available at a conference in London in Autumn 1990 to obtain further information about the SHRP program. (A)
