This report is a case study of the effects of competition on bus operation in the Medway area of Kent since deregulation. An earlier report (see IRRD 811553) considered the period from November 1985 to February 1988. The findings of the case study are presented in several sections. Following an introduction to the study area there is consideration of the changes, since deregulation to the structures of the operating companies, the commercial network and level of commercial competition and changes to supported services. There are sections on changes to local bus fares, information and publicity, public reaction, innovation and special needs and community transport. There is also a brief general discussion on the effects on deregulation and privatisation in transport. Interviews with bus operators and Kent County Council, were carried out, however it should be noted that Maidstone and District Motor Services, did not participate in the study. For the general overview report see IRRD no 853811, for the other case studies see IRRD nos 853812, 853814-853817.
