In this report a case study of the effects of competition on bus operation is presented. The Tyne and Wear study area is defined as comprising the five metropolitan districts of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. An earlier report (see IRRD 827586) considered in detail the period between November 1985 and November 1987. This study expands upon that research, following an introduction to the study area there is a discussion of the changes, since deregulation to the structures of the operating companies, the commercial network of services, level of competition and changes to supported services. Sections on changes to fares, information and publicity, public reaction, innovation and special needs and community transport then follow. A brief general discussion on the effects of deregulation and privatisation in transport is included. For the general overview report see IRRD no 853811, for the other case studies see IRRD nos 853812-853813, 853815-853817.
