• The ServCity consortium will trial a premium automated taxi service on the streets of London, supported by Innovate UK
  • TRL in conjunction with its Smart Mobility Living Lab team are creating a CAV test bed in London that will create a process for approving automated mobility services
  • These approval mechanisms will be a critical factor for the first industry players to roll-out automated mobility services

The ServCity consortium, led by Jaguar Land Rover, has been chosen to explore options for the introduction of safe, efficient and reliable smart mobility services that will reduce the volume of private car journeys in urban areas.

The consortium will address the many urban challenges that impact congestion, private CAV use cases and safety - in doing so, ServCity creates a ‘blueprint’ for future smart mobility services.

TRL will bring to bear knowledge from previous CAV projects such as GATEway, MERGEGreenwich and MoveUK. TRL’s experience  will enable the ServCity consortium to establish ‘real-world’ benchmarks and well defined acceptance criteria which will underpin the policy and regulation with which cities need to comply to be able to confidently adopt automated mobility services.

The Smart Mobility Living Lab: London (the capital’s CAV test bed) will support rigorous independent testing and will create  a robust evidence base for automated mobility.  The  independent evidence of vehicle performance, behaviour and customer acceptance  provides the key to the safe introduction of fully automated vehicles in complex urban environments.

Investment in the development of methods for the evaluation and approval of CAV’s in London’s highly complex road environments will accelerate the evolution and adoption of the technologies needed to make automated mobility a reality. As such, TRL’s role  and contribution to the ServCity programme will help to reinforce the UK's position as a global leader in the deployment of CAV systems.
