This year’s theme is ‘Skills for Life’, reflecting on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career and businesses to develop a talented workforce that is equipped with future-ready skills. TRL has been involved in apprenticeship schemes for many years and has a proud history of helping young people develop their workplace skills while gaining a qualification.

Apprenticeships are one of the most effective ways to develop a highly skilled workforce and four of our apprentices, who are at various stages of their courses, share their insights and thoughts on their experience as an apprentice at TRL:

Hi, I’m Jake and I have been an apprentice technician at TRL for almost a year now as I started in March 2022 and over this period of time, I have learnt many things and have had many experiences from doing all sorts of work.

The type of work I have come across so far vary from coring (Coring is when we take a core sample of all the layers of the manufactured road when we investigate roads) and DCP’s (DCP stands for Dynamic Cone Penetrometer and is one of our testing devices for investigating roads) to data processing and even operating certain vehicles such as our DFG (Deflectograph survey vehicle). I have undergone numerous training courses for health and safety and using certain apparatus/equipment to gain confidence with driving with trailers. This has helped me both in work but even outside of work in my day-to-day life.

While doing all of this I have been doing a construction support technician course alongside this. I have been completing this every Monday. Even though there is still over another year to go with this course what I have learnt so far has been helping with what I have been doing on site and in the office and I am excited to see what there is to come and what I will learn in near and far future.

Hi there, I'm Laura and I am completing a Level 6 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship at TRL. TRL’s apprenticeship scheme is very successful as it exposes the apprentice to numerous work possibilities, all with the help of a manager and mentor to guide you. I highly recommend apprenticeships as they are a great way to apply skills learned in the classroom to the working world, whilst earning and gaining a qualification.

Let me introduce myself, my name is Razvan Pana, and I started my construction support technician apprenticeship this time last year. During this time, I’ve learnt many valuable and knowledgeable skills which helped me improve my performance at TRL, especially when going out on site and doing things such as Coring, DCP and Trial Pits. I believe this apprenticeship scheme will be very beneficial for me, for the present and for the future during my time at TRL as it allows me to develop a wide range of crucial skills enabling me to improve and boost my career in this industry.

Hello, I'm Joshua. I am finding my time at TRL really great because I am learning a lot of new skills and knowledge as I didn’t study any type of business studies at GCSE or for my A-levels so all of the things I am learning either at college or in the workplace are all new information to me. I’m also using all of these new skills and knowledge straight into my working pattern so I can get used to using them early on and continue to use them more effectively the longer I work for. I would definitely recommend this apprenticeship to anyone who is looking for a great apprenticeship to start with as you are always surrounded by great people, and they are always there to help if you need it, but you can also use your skills gained straight away and use them to improve your abilities within your workplace.
