We have undertaken two feasibility studies for technological requirements and services to be implemented on a corridor of continuous vehicle connectivity on a 112km stretch of road from Central London to the Port of Dover. The completed project will improve safety, efficiency and convenience for drivers as well as providing a test bed for new and innovative connected services, including future automated vehicles.

The challenge

Two projects worked in parallel to investigate the feasibility for a connected corridor. One team investigated the technological requirements for connectivity infrastructure on that stretch of road. The other worked closely with stakeholders to understand what services would be of interest, what the benefits are and what issues we might encounter. Our specialist teams examined what data is needed to deliver a reliable connected service on this road network. 

Our approach

We have conducted several stakeholder consultation exercises to gauge the levels of interest and the benefits that could be gained from a connected road network. Our project team has engaged with teams running similar schemes in Europe, to ensure that the infrastructure will be compatible.

TRL invited suppliers to take part in bench tests and track trials to demonstrate their capability to deliver the core requirements of an effective connected corridor infrastructure. 

The results

The project has delivered its final reports to Highways England on the feasibility of providing connectivity on the road network. We have taken into particular consideration the requirements of the freight industry, as a heavy user of this route. We are focused on making any service compatible across the European road network. Our findings will support future work of creating a specification test bed to use for future rollouts.
