This research considers the links between leisure cycling, purely for the enjoyment of it, and cycling for more utility purposes, such as to work. Surveys of more than 500 leisure cyclists, non-cyclists and those who cycle to work have been completed along with depth interviews and discussion groups. The main focus of the work is to understand what are the differences between the perceptions of leisure cycling and utility cycling and to determine how this might be overcome in order to increase the use of cycling for utility journeys. Recommendations are made of the type of facility and promotional means that might encourage more people to move from leisure cycling to utility cycling. (A)
