Portable weighpads have been used by some Police and Traffic Examiners for enforcing goods vehicle weight limits but there has been some concern expressed regarding the accuracy of such equipment. Controlled tests were therefore undertaken of three different types of weighpad to assess their accuracy. It was found that on average a series of pads, irrespective of the type used, could weigh vehicles to within 145 kg per axle (for 96% of the tests this error was within 100 kg per axle). Slopes of up to 2% longitudinal and 5% transverse were found to have only a small effect on the accuracy of vehicle weights but there was a transfer of weight between axles. Field tests and detailed operational experience have led to the production of guidelines for desirable features of weighpads and of suitable survey sites. (A)
