In this report a literature review of some 200 references to Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) and other research on the contribution to greenhouse gases from UK road traffic is presented. The review is organised into three parts. Part 1 is an extended essay on global warming and road transport. In part 2, the ways of reducing the fuel consumption of road vehicles are examined. Fuel economy is examined under the headings of vehicle technical factors, and driver and technical effects. The potential of alternative fuels is then reviewed, and the likely role of battery electric road vehicles is assessed. The last section of Part 2 deals briefly with energy considerations for other modes of land transport. Part 3 presents a summary and conclusions.
