In this report the extent to which waste materials and industrial by-products can be used in road construction is discussed. The report is divided into three parts. In part one, the properties of the wastes and by-products which can be used in road construction are given. Part two considers how there materials may be used in the construction of each of the road pavement layers. Future developments are outlined in part three. The materials under consideration include: colliery spoil; china clay sand; pulverised fuel ash (PFA) and furnace bottom ash; blastfurnace slag; steel slag; slate waste; spent oil shale; construction and demolition wastes; incinerator ash; and imported materials.
