Nosing type expansion joints have been investigated over a period of up to seven years. Studies included installation practice, nosing design and materials used, structural measurements at selected joints, the determination of the nature of the deterioration and the factors influencing performance. These factors were evaluated and graded according to the severity of their effect on the long term serviceability of the nosing. Traffic, materials used, workmanship, installation conditions and the condition of the substrate were the key factors but often it was a complex combination of factors which caused premature failure.
