this report describes test runs, on a section of the m.5 motorway, running from chelston to blackbrook, of computer programs developed at the trrl to optimize a vertical alignment with respect to costs of earthworks, it describes the phasing of the vertical alignment with the horizontal alignment. the costs of earthworks were 457 000 for the engineer's initial vertical alignment, 361 000 for the optimised unphased vertical alignment, and 396 000 for the phased optimized vertical alignment (a).
