this report gives a review of current knowledge on the textural changes experienced by road surfacing aggregates as a result of abrasion, polishing, differential wear and weathering. these have been related to the behaviour of five particular roadstones, of different petrographic types inserted in the road at two sites. the roadstones have been studied in detail with the aid of a scanning electron microscope using a replica technique which allowed the continuous non-destructive observation of selected samples over a period of fifteen months. changes in micro-texture have been found to accord with skid-resistance values, traffic density, category of site and mineralogical composition of individual aggregates.
