The performance of asphalt surface courses laid on the Scottish trunk road network is assessed on an annual basis by The Scottish Inspection Panel (SIP). This report details the results of the 2015 survey and makes a comparison with previous SIP survey results dating back to 2008. The 2015 survey highlights some notable improvements in surface course performance including a reduction in aggregate loss; improvements in joint construction; and improved performance on highly stressed sites that contain smaller stone aggregate sizes. The report discusses the progress made towards improving long term performance of asphalt surface course and makes recommendations to ensure that positive changes continue to be implemented and maintained.
