This study was designed to measure the established pattern of taxi and private hire car operation around Ipswich station rank prior to the launch of a taxi sharing scheme. Taxi and private hire car movements were observed for a complete week (5-12 June 1988). Observations were made from early morning (0630) to midnight each day. Most of the work from the rank was undertaken by taxi drivers who use the rank regularly. Train arrivals (from London) caused regular, intense peaking of passenger flow during weekdays. A significant proportion of hirings were for short trips (five minutes or so). Few (pre-booked) private hire cars took passengers from the station, but passenger arrivals were more or less evenly split between the two trades. (A)
