852 motorists were asked to say how much they would be worried if they had to drive in particular situations. the results showed that many drivers were worried about some of the situations posed, and in particular about motorway driving in bad weather conditions. many drivers do think they could be involved in an accident, and that cars will catch fire or turn over if an accident occurs. these fears are more prevalent in some groups than others, but especially among those who have less driving experience. the extent to which drivers may or may not be able to avoid such situations and the merit and feasibility of providing training or guidance to alleviate such worries are discussed.
