the climate in tropical areas is an important factor affecting the performance of roads and therefore a knowledge of the climatic conditions is of prime interest to a road engineer. this report gives the results of climatological observations carried out in the emirate of abu dhabi between 1969 and 1971 as part of the research programme of the overseas unit. temperatures reaching 73 deg c in road surfacing, with diurnal changes of 46 deg c, were recorded and air shade temperatures exceeding 51 deg c were observed. results computed from data on solar radiation, air humidity and wind speeds are also given in the report. because of the limited information on road temperatures in the tropics, it is proposed that in future work instrumented reference slabs should be constructed alongside full-scale experimental roads, so that their performance can be correlated to local climatological conditions.(a)
