lime produced in small kilns is suitable for stabilising soils to provide a satisfactory material for road bases. this report reviews possible sources of lime in ghana and gives details of a field trial with a simple updraught kiln in ghana, with an estimate of costs. the relative economics of using natural materials, cement-stabilised materials and lime-stabilised materials are discussed, and the circumstances under which the establishment of village-scale lime production would be viable are considered. further trials with small kilns are in hand.
