Loading tests on two steel orthotropic bridge decks are described. both decks had trapezoidal stiffeners but the two designs differed in the size and spacing of the stiffeners. A rig was constructed in which the full-size panels were subjected to static loads using wheels typical of those fitted to heavy commercial vehicles. Stresses were measured adjacent to welded connections which were to be investigated for fatigue under traffic loading. The results are presented as influence lines for each gauge position, the deck panels being loaded by a single wheel. Two sizes of tyre were used and the effect of a 38mm thick asphalt surfacing on the stresses in one deck panel was also measured.
