Two computer programs have been developed to analyse the one- and two-dimensional consolidation of multi-layered subsoils. This Report details the theoretical basis and limitations of these programs. The analysis employed in the programs for predicting the rate of consolidation was based on Terzaghi's theory. Despite the limitations of this theory the accuracy of the predictions are, for most practical problems, dependent upon the quality of the subsoil input data. (A)
