This study quantified the natural resources used, and the waste and emissions produced by the UK motor industry in 2000 using a mass balance approach. This included all stages in the industry from manufacture through vehicle use, to the final disposal of end of life vehicles. The vehicles included in the motor industry were cars and taxis, light goods vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, buses and coaches and motorcycles. The report presents comprehensive data on resource flows through the industry including material use, energy consumption, solid wastes arising and emissions to air. It investigates the impact of future trends and influences on industry resource use through the use of scenarios. Five recommendations are made to improve the resource productivity of the motor industry. These are presented with a number of associated actions.
