Transport Scotland has been working closely with the road industry to develop new surface course materials that are more sustainable. The aim is to extend the serviceable life of surface courses through improved durability, and to increase the use of local aggregates to reduce the tonnage of aggregate that is currently hauled across Scotland. These new surface course materials are collectively known as “TS2010” materials.

This study involves making high speed friction measurements to assess the available skid resistance and allow comparisons to be made between conventional materials and Transport Scotland’s new TS2010 surface course. The study complements other ongoing work, such as the collection of low speed skid resistance measured by the GripTester.
